UCL Fantasy Captain Picks: Matchday 5

We are nearing the end of the UCL group stages and while many fantasy assets have proven their worth and present a strong argument to be your captain pick, in-form players such as Håland and Fernandes deserve a look for your captain’s armband. These are our captain picks for matchday 5:

UCL Fantasy Captains for Matchday 5

Erling Braut Håland Vs SS Lazio (H)

His eight-game goal-scoring streak across all competitions was brought to an abrupt halt in a shocking loss against Koln over the weekend. However, that should be of least concern for a man who has scored in every game in the UCL this season at a rate of 57 minutes per goal including a brace in his last two games. Lazio have failed to stop the opposition from scoring and have conceded in every Champions League game this season. So there is a real chance of Håland getting more than one goal again.

Mohammed Salah Vs Ajax (H)

Liverpool will look to secure qualification to the knockouts with a win against Ajax this week and if in-form Diogo Jota is to be benched, Salah is going to be the most key-player in attack for the Reds. Salah will be keen on getting his goal-scoring form back again and is due to a return but his price tag of 11.6M means that he will be a more interesting prospect to those using the limitless wildcard this week.

Bruno Fernandes Vs PSG (H)

Over the last few weeks, we have noticed that Bruno is more than capable of scoring goals from open play and the myth that he relies only on penalties for attacking returns has been busted. Someone said that Fernandes coming to Manchester United is like an “Eric Cantona coming to United” moment and it certainly feels so with his recent performances. They have won their last three games in across all competitions and Bruno has scored in each of them. His tally is now 10 goals and seven assists in 14 games this season. Talk about impact. The Red Devils will now try to secure the double over PSG with Fernandes expected to put in a good performance again.

Differential Captain

Duvan Zapata Vs FC Midtjylland (H)

Atalanta has been streaky in the UCL this season but are still in contention for the knockouts with each remaining game feeling like a must-win. Their opponents Midtjylland however, are already knocked out and are one of the only teams yet to get a single point along with Marseille. The spotlight in this game will be on Striker Duvan Zapata who is also the joint top scorer for Atalanta this season and he also scored a goal and assisted another two in the reverse fixture.

Bundesliga Fantasy Differential Picks: Matchday 9

As we look another batch of exciting Bundesliga Fantasy Differential Picks for Matchday 9, find out why Jean-Phillipe Mateta, Christoph Baumgartner and Oscar Wendt make a strong argument to be a part of your team. These are our differentials for the week:

Forwards

Jean-Philippe Mateta Vs Hoffenheim (H)

Mainz might be considered by many as a relegation contender and will pin their survival hopes on star forward Mateta. He is an individually brilliant player as seen in his hattrick against Freiburg last week where he single-handedly won Mainz the game. Mateta is now tied with Kramaric and Alario for the third-highest goal scorer with seven goals. His opponents for the week Hoffenheim have conceded eight goals over their last three Bundesliga games and Mainz will be confident heading into this game and hope for all three points as they look to capitalize on a run where they play four of the bottom 10 teams over the next four weeks.

Leon Bailey Vs Hertha BSC (H)

Bailey’s form isn’t making enough noise which explains his 2% ownership but the numbers speak for themselves. He has scored in each of his last four games across all competitions and averages 10 points in Bundesliga Fantasy this season. Hertha is a great game to target for forwards and he also offers great flexibility for the week as he has an individual fixture.

Midfielders

Christoph Baumgartner Vs FSV Mainz (A)

Baumgartner was a must-have towards the end of last season because of his high floor due to the number of shots he takes and also the high ceiling at budget. This season, however, he started off really badly and did not get attacking bonus points until Matchday 7. He has always been on my radar but now that he has scored in his last two games for Hoffenheim, it might be the right time to invest and be an earlier buyer in the player owned by 3% as Hoffenheim play Mainz and Augsburg both being the last games of their respective matchdays.

Andre Hahn Vs SC Freiburg (H)

Freiburg are just behind Schalke for the number of shots conceded (135 Vs 140) while also conceding the third-highest number of goals this season (19). The budget shot spammer in Hahn who costs just 4.4M leave no stone unturned when it comes to taking shots and if you are lucky then he might even finish one.

Defenders

Erik Durm Vs Union Berlin (A)

Eintracht Frankfurt have not lost any of their last five competitive matches away against Union Berlin (W4, D1). They have also scored 15 goals while conceding just three in those games. A point to be noted is that only one of those games was in the Bundesliga which Frankfurt won 1-2. Still, Durm could be a good budget buster at 3.2M while playing right-wing back for Frankfurt.

Oscar Wendt Vs Schalke (H)

The 35-year-old Swede has immediately taken over set-piece responsibilities at Borussia after replacing Ramy Bensebaini. Gladbach have scored over half of their goals (7 of 13) and the Royal Blues have conceded a league-high nine goals from set-pieces so there is a real possibility of attacking returns from Wendt in this game.

Goalkeeper

Stefan Ortega Vs RB Leipzig (A)

If the speculation about heavy rotation by Leipzig against Arminia is right then it makes you question how many goals they could go score with bench players in attack. This could be a great opportunity for Ortega to rack up lots of saves.

Bundesliga Fantasy Player Rankings: Matchday 9

A thrilling matchday of European football comes to an end where all the Bundesliga teams except RB Leipzig registered victories in the UCL and Europa League. Now we take a look at the best players in Bundesliga Fantasy this week as we are faced with another week which has an abundance of attacking options but not so many defensive ones. Here are our player rankings for matchday 9:

RankNameTeamOpponentValueComments
1Robert LewandowskiFCB@VFB20.3MLewandowski thrives against a team that gives up lots of shots. But then he does so against every other team.
2Erling Braut HålandBVBVs KOE18.8MDespite his recent heroics, he ranks second for me due to Koln's strong defensive record away this season where teams have failed to score more than one goal against them + the small possibility of him being rested.
3Andrej KramarićTSG@M0515.3MKramaric's goal against Stuttgart in MD8 and Liberec in the Europa League means that he has now scored in 8 games in a row for Hoffenheim. This streak started last season.
4Lucas AlarioB04Vs BSC11.5MHis rare blank against Arminia doesn't concern me much as goes up against a shaky Hertha defense this week.
5Alassane PléaBMGVs S0415.4MOpposition strikers have scored in each of Schalke's last four games.
6Thomas MullerFCB@VFB18.4M
7Yussuf PoulsenRBLVs DSC11.5M
8Matheus CunhaBSC@B0414.4MCunha has been one of the best forward assets in fantasy assets and has scored double digits in six out of his eight games this season. So him playing against a strong defensive team does not concern me anymore.
9Wout WeghorstWOBVs SVW15.5MBremen might have held Bayern and Lewandowski back last week but this could quickly turn into a header fest if Wolfsburg get their set-pieces right.

Midfielders

RankNameTeamOpponentValueComments
1Christopher NkunkuRBLVs DSC14.9MHe hasn't been anything special as his form would suggest but it is fair to hopeful of some bonus and possibly a goal/assist in this game.
2Lars StindlBMGVs S0413.1MStindl is the best midfielder to get from Borussia in fantasy and has been thriving in the absence of Hofmann.
3Jadon SanchoBVBVs KOE17.6MA good shout in a game where Dortmund are expected to score a few goals but you should be wary of the rotation risk here since he played the entire game against Club Brugge in the UCL.
4Leroy SaneFCB@VFB17.2M
5Filip KostićSGE@FCU14.7M
6Josip Brekalo WOBVs SVW10.3MI expect him to be a popular pick this week because of his floor and the star flexibility since he plays first. But you have to be patient with him if you expect a goal or assist.
7Giovanni ReynaBVBVs KOE7.9M
8Florian WirtzB04Vs BSC7M
9Christoph BaumgartnerTSG@M0510.6M
10Daniel Caligiuri FCAVs SCF10.3MCaligiuri's strong performance against Borussia warrants a spot in the rankings against a Freiburg team that has conceded the second highest shots and also gave Mainz their first win last week.

Defenders

RankNameTeamOpponentValueComments
1AngeliñoRBLVs DSC14.9MArminia have scored just once in the last three games and that was a Hradecky own goal. They have conceded nine goals in the same period.
2Raphaël GuerreiroBVBVs KOE15.3MGuerreiro is an easy recommendation but it is still a doubt whether he starts or not due to problems in his thigh.
3Oscar WendtBMGVs S046.4MOne advantage that Wendt has over Lainer is that he is on corner kicks and free kicks now. He even scored a stunning free kick in the midweek UCL game against Shakhtar and he is going to be a real threat against a Schalke side that has conceded a league-high nine goals from set-pieces.
4Nordi MukieleRBLVs DSC10.6MNot as attacking as Angeliño but he is a duels won monster and Arminia is too good to pass up.

UCL Fantasy Player Rankings: Matchday 4

UCL Fantasy is back and so is our player rankings for matchday 4, with Ronaldo, Jota and Cancelo all ranking high on the list due to their relatively easy fixtures. The matchday kicks off with Rennes going up against an inform Chelsea and Krasnodar looking to settle the score against Sevilla after losing 3-2 despite having a two-goal lead and being a man up. These are our rankings for the week:

1João CanceloManchester City@Olympiacos5.5MThere is a massive difference in the level between Manchester City and the other teams in the group. They have conceded just one goal so far whereas this week's opponents Olympiacos have scored just one. So Cancelo is a good shout for a cleansheet as well as some possible attacking returns.
2Raphaël GuerreiroBorussia DortmundVs Club Brugge6MHe has a goal and two assists in his last two games while playing for one of the best defensive teams in the world. Oh and they also kept a cleansheet in the reverse fixture.

UCL Fantasy Captain Picks: Matchday 4

Matchday 3 was a high scoring week in UCL Fantasy with lots of goals all around and now Matchday 4 promises a quick turnaround as we look forward to another promising week of Champions League football. This week has the same fixtures as the last matchday but with the home and away teams reversed. Here are our captain picks for matchday 4:

UCL Fantasy Captains for Matchday 4

Cristiano Ronaldo Vs Ferencvárosi TC (H)

Let’s be honest, just an assist in a game where Juventus scored four goals was disappointing. At least by Ronaldo’s standards. He has eight goals and an assist in five games in the Serie A which translates to a goal every 48 minutes. Ronaldo will be looking to translate that form into goals in the UCL. This week he has the perfect opportunity to open up his tally in the tournament against Hungarian side Ferencvárosi TC who have the joint-worst defence in the champions league this season with 11 goals conceded in three games.

Robert Lewandowski Vs RB Salzburg (H)

If you were curious about which other team shares the unwanted title of joint-worst defence then it is RB Salzburg. Bayern put six goals past them in the reverse fixture including two goals from Lewandowski and I think it would be fair to expect more of the same this time. Especially with Lewandowski looking to bounce back from a rare blank in his last league game against Werder Bremen. He is easily the best captain pick from the Wednesday games.

Erling Braut Håland Vs Club Brugge (H)

What better to celebrate your Golden Boy award than with a four-goal Lupenreiner hattrick, i.e, a flawless hattrick in a 2-5 victory against Hertha Berlin in the league. His achievements this season have mostly been overshadowed by those of Lewandowski but he has more goals in the same amount of games (14) than him (13) across all competitions. He also boasts a better conversion rate (43% Vs 41%) in the Bundesliga. Håland has scored in five consecutive home games and also scored a brace in the reverse fixture against Brugge. So he is a good bet to score goals this week.

Differential Captains

Diogo Jota Vs Atalanta (H)

Jota is squashing every doubt the critics had after his transfer to Liverpool one game at a time. His hat-trick in a 0-5 victory against last year’s quarter-finalists Atalanta in matchday 3 was definitely the most surprising performance of the week and exposed the defensive frailties of Atalanta in what was supposed to be an evenly matched game. He is slowly becoming an important asset to Liverpool and his high ceiling should make him an interesting captaincy option this week.

Dušan Tadić Vs Midtjylland (H)

Despite being in incredible form, the Ajax captain has mostly been overlooked in UCL and is owned by just 1% of the players. He has scored in each of his last six games for the team including the winning goal against Midtjylland in the reverse fixture. The game was a tame affair with Ajax winning it 1-2 but they did miss a lot of first-team players in that game due to illness. However, more can be expected from the team which is averaging five goals in its last six games as they host Midtjylland at home this time.
