Fantasy Bundesliga: Differential Picks for Matchday 28

In our Fantasy Bundesliga tips for the week, we look at the differential picks that you should consider for matchday 28 in a week where many evenly matched teams go up against each other.

Forwards

Matheus Cunha Vs Borussia M’gladbach (H)

Hertha have turned the Olympiastadion Berlin into a fortress over the last two home games securing impressive victories against Bayer Leverkusen and Augsburg. This week’s opponents Borussia have had a difficult time away against Hertha and the Berliners average more goals per game on average at home (2) against the foals than against any other team. With numbers such as these, a Berlin attacker becomes a tempting differential and there is no better name than the club’s talisman Matheus Cunha if you decide to hedge your bets on the fortress staying intact this week.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting Vs FC Union Berlin (H)

To say that Bayern Munich miss striker Robert Lewandowski is an understatement. The FIFA Men’s Player of the Year has scored 35 goals this season which is more than seven Bundesliga teams have managed to score so far this season and was just five goals away from breaking the single-season scoring record before injury struck. His replacement – Choupo-Moting, isn’t bad by any means. The Cameronian international has had an impressive showing in the Champions League with three goals in as many starts. Including a goal against PSG in the midweek game. He offers a budget entry into the FCB attack at 9.4M and should start the next couple of games at least until Lewandowski returns.

Midfielders

Daniel Caligiuri Vs FC Schalke 04 (A)

Bundesliga Fantasy managers are spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting a midfielder from Augsburg against Schalke but former royal blue Caligiuri stands out with his set-pieces prowess against the worst set-piece defending team in the league. Teammate Marco Richter has been a more popular pick from the Augsburg midfield and is also worth a shout if he starts.

Amine Harit Vs FC Augsburg (H)

Harit was a livewire in midfield against Bayer Leverkusen and despite losing the game 2-1, he was the best player on the pitch. Schalke might’ve accepted their fate but one of the most prestigious clubs would still look to add some wins and points to their name. If you are chasing the pack and looking for a differential that could help you with a much-needed boost to end the season then Harit could do the job with his next two opponents – Freiburg and Arminia both being second and fourth for shots conceded respectively.

Defender

Daniel Brosinski Vs FC Köln (A)

FC Köln have conceded the most goals at home (23) after Hertha BSC (24) and Schalke (29) and top the list for the most penalties conceded with eight. Mainz has seen a resurgence under new coach Bo Svensson and the main area of improvement has been in defense. The zerofivers have conceded just twice in their last four games and it’s a potential ceiling game for Brosinski with the possibility of a clean sheet and a penalty. Not to mention the bonus as well.

Goalkeeper

Robin Zentner Vs FC Köln (A)

The Köln-Mainz match is a massive six-pointer game for two teams trying to fight their way out of the relegation zone so this game could be open-ended with Mainz keeper Robin Zentner expected to stay busy throughout the game.

Joker

Schalke scored their first goal Grammozis against Leverkusen last week and they are showing some signs of improvement so an Augsburg win might not be straightforward. Instead, I choose SVW 0-1 RBL as my joker pick of the week because a Leipzig clean sheet can be expected and it’s hard to imagine Werder Bremen scoring against the best defense in the Bundesliga.

Bundesliga Fantasy: Player Rankings for Matchday 28

Erling Haaland might’ve failed to score in his last five games for club and country but he still ranks high in our Bundesliga Fantasy player rankings for matchday 28

Note: Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sané and Lucas Hernandez have been ruled out for the game against Union Berlin due to injury.

RankNameTeamOpponentValueComments
1Thomas Müller
FCBVs FCU22.8MThe only premium player in form with a good fixture. If Bayern were able to dominate proceedings and generate 31 shots against PSG at home then I would like to think that more of the same is on the cards against Union Berlin.
2Erling Braut HaalandBVB@VFB21MHaaland might've failed to score in his last five starts but has a suitable fixture to end his goal drought against Stuttgart's exploitable defense in a do or die game for their European ambitions.
3Wout WeghorstWOB@SGE20.7MWolfsburg hold the upper hand in the match between the second best attack and best defense in the league with their four game winning run away against Frankfurt. What makes Weghorst even more appealing is the makeshift backline of Tuta-Ilsanker-Ndicka that is tasked with keeping him at bay.
4André SilvaSGEVs WOB20.6MPreferred when he plays as a lone striker up top rather than with Jović.
5Saša KalajdžićVFBVs BVB7.4MStuttgart will be high on confidence after demolishing Dortmund 1-5 in the reverse fixture and are on a six-game unbeaten run at home.
6Eric Maxim Choupo-MotingFCBVs FCU9.4MChoupo-Moting looked great against PSG with a goal, five shots and three key passes and even if he is isn't on the same level as Lewandowski then it is good enough when you play for a team like Bayern.
7Matheus CunhaBSCVs BMG15.6MWay too inconsistent for his own good but both these teams have been mediocre defensively.
8Lucas AlarioB04@TSG11.6MHe has 10 goals in just 11 starts this season averaging a goal every 116 minutes which is only bettered by the top three goal scorers and Max Kruse.
9Alexander SørlothRBL@SVW14.6MLeipzig have failed to score over one goal in their last three games while Werder Bremen has the best defense amongst teams ranked eight or below this season. So this could be another dull affair.
10Marcus ThuramBMG@BSC15.5MSkills and some stroke of luck combined for Thuram's 23 pointer last week and he gets the nod over teammate Pléa who hasn't scored in his last nine games.

Midfielders

RankNameTeamOpponentValueComments
1Filip KostićSGEVs WOB19.8MIt was unexpected that both these teams would be in the top four at this point and with the form they are in, its anyone's game.
2Christopher NkunkuRBL@SVW17.4M
3André HahnFCA@S045.6MDespite being a winger, Hahn has replaced the Augsburg strikers up top with his performances and is averaging 10.4 points over his last five games. Perfect form heading into the game against Schalke.
4Rolland SallaiSCF@DSC8.9MSallai absolutely loves a game against a midtable or bottom team. He has six goals and four assists in 12 games against the 12 bottom teams and now he plays Arminia and Schalke in back-to-back games.
5Dani OlmoRBL@SVW18.5MWith first choice left-back Augustinsson missing out for Bremen, Olmo could get more bonus points than his usual quota when he goes up against rookie Felix Agu.
6Leroy SanéFCBVs FCU19.6MIt seems obvious that Sané is the best midfielder from Bayern because of his advanced position and goal threat but he hasn't scored in the Bundesliga since matchday 13. If the goals don't come soon enough then Kimmich will become the #1 option in fantasy again as he continues to build form after his performance against PSG where he had an unreal 10 key-passes by himself.
7Lars StindlBMG@BSC16.4M
8Ritsu DoanDSCVs SCF10MNot the most flashy or exciting player but could prove to be a rank boosting differential with games against Freiburg, Augsburg and Schalke next.
9Amine HaritS04Vs FCA12.1MA few wins against out of form teams does not make Augsburg good by any means and Harit put a MOTM performance in the last game against Leverkusen but was unlucky to not be involved in any goals.
10Christoph BaumgartnerTSGVs B0413.1M

Defenders

RankNameTeamOpponentValueComments
1Borna SosaVFBVs BVB6.2MSosa's 23 pointer last week is a reminder to those who took him out on wildcard that he isn't the one to drop.
2Raphaël GuerreiroBVB@VFB17.1MHe probably won't play as a left-winger again but still has potential for points on both ends.
3Christian GünterSCF@DSC11.8M
4Marcel HalstenbergRBL@SVW14.2MThe best odds for a clean sheet this week but might not be worth it as he will play as a left center-back rather than left-back or wing-back.
5Daniel BrosinskiM05@KOE6.9MOffers more attacking threat compared to Mwene and also scored a penalty last week. Who doesn't love a wing-back on set-pieces?
6Kevin MbabuWOB@SGE12.1M
7Lucas HernandezFCBVs FCU12.5MHe will win plenty of duels atleast if you can justify the hefty price tag.
8Raphael FrambergerFCA@S044.6MAugsburg defenders haven't been worth investing in ever since Phillip Max left but you can make an exception for once since they play the worst attack in the league.
9Deyovaisio ZeefuikBSCVs BMG7.6M
10Ramy BensebainiBMG@BSC12.3M

Goalkeepers

RankNameTeamOpponentValueComments
1Stefan OrtegaDSCVs SCF6.9MAssuming that Freiburg will have more shots for Arminia to save than vice versa.
2Florian MüllerSCF@DSC4.9M
3Rafał GikiewiczFCA@S048.5MGikiewicz is only second to Ortega when it comes to total saves.
4Robin ZentnerM05@KOE4.7M
5Gregor KobelVFBVs BVB6MKobel is averaging 9.2 points his last five games and is a worthy option if you want a keeper with an individual fixture this week.

Joker

Bayer Leverkusen might’ve lost to Arminia Bielefeld and Hertha who sit at the bottom of the table with Schalke but are still levels ahead of the worst team in the Bundesliga. I expect them to bounce back under new coach Hannes Wolf so Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 is my joker pick for the week.

1Wout WeghorstWOBVs KOE20.3MWeghorst is in great form, has one of the best fixtures this on paper that has had at least four goals in each game since 2018. He might be reliant on multiple returns for a good score but it's a good possibility against Köln.
2André SilvaSGE@BVB20.2MThis game is all about who is more motivated to get that last Champions League spot over the other but Dortmund are a hot mess right now.
3Saša KalajdžićVFBVs SVW7.3MWerder Bremen have conceded the most headers in 2021 so it is all about using his head to the best effect for Saša.
4Erling Braut HaalandBVBVs SGE20.8MHaaland is one of the most consistent strikers in the world and shouldn't be doubted but no goals in 13 shots over three matches for the Norway National Team is sure to raise some eyebrows.
5Leon BaileyB04Vs S0414.6MForm doesn't matter when you play Schalke. It is a golden opportunity for any forward to add some goals to their name.
6Max KruseFCUVs BSC12.1M
7Thomas Müller
FCB@RBL22.6MAn easy recommendation on any other day but the absence of Lewandowski slightly tilts the tie in favor of the best defense of the league over the best attack.
8Patrick SchickB04Vs S0415.7MIf form does matter to you then Schick could be an even better pick than Bailey with his threat from headers against the worst set-piece defending team in the league.
9Matheus CunhaBSC@FCU15.6M
10Alassane PléaBMGVs SCF16.9M

Midfielders

RankNameTeamOpponentValueComments
1Filip KostićSGE@BVB19.4MIt doesn't matter if Can starts at right-back or Meunier. With both teams missing key players in midfield and defense, Kostić could run riot in a potential goal fest.
2Christopher NkunkuRBLVs FCB17.3MThe hunter might turn prey in this fixture and Leipzig will fancy their chances in a must-win game against a Bayern team that is far from their best.
3Florian WirtzB04Vs S048.3MIt is almost impossible to predict who will do better between Wirtz and Demirbay against Schalke because both have been equally bad.
4Maximilian ArnoldWOBVs KOE16.3MIf budget isn't a constraint then Arnold is a great differential with a minimum score of nine in his last six games.
5Lars StindlBMGVs SCF16MStindl's best performances have come in the absence of Hofmann but ending an eight game losing streak against Schalke has no significance.
6Leroy SanéFCB@RBL19.5M
7Marco RichterFCAVs TSG9.8M
8Vincenzo GrifoSCF@BMG14.6MHe could be a sneaky pick if you expect Borussia to go back to their old ways before the win against Schalke. Also plays Arminia in the early fixture next and Schalke after that.
9Christoph BaumgartnerTSG@FCA13.1M
10Thorgan HazardBVBVs SGE12.6MFrankfurt will be missing Hasebe, Hinteregger and Toure in defense so the makeshift backline of Tuta-Ilsanker-Ndicka doesn't inspire much confidence.

1Borna SosaVFBVs SVW5.8MProbably won't keep a clean sheet this week but has great attacking upside and that is all that matters.

5Jeremie FrimpongB04Vs S048.6MIf Borussia could keep a clean sheet after conceding in eight games straight then there is hope for Leverkusen who have done it just once in their last 18 games. That was against Borussia.

7Deyovaisio ZeefuikBSC@FCU7.5MLast week's most surprising performer, Zeefuik racked up an impressive 19 points against Leverkusen last week. However, it is yet to be seen if Hertha can replicate such performances away from home.

1Florian MüllerSCF@BMG4.6MMüller's monster haul on matchday 26 means that he has the two highest scores in a single game for a keeper this season. 22 points against Stuttgart on MD18 and 18 points against Augsburg on MD26.
2Stefan OrtegaDSC@M056.9MIf your main emphasis is on gaining points rather than just rotation then Ortega and Müller make the best combo.
3Robin ZentnerM05Vs DSC5MMainz have gone from being shut by opponents to shutting them out and are more likely to keep a clean sheet against Arminia than not but they don't generate too many shots so the potential for saves isn't much.

Fantasy Bundesliga: Must-Have/Template Players for Matchday 27

We received our sixth wildcard of the Fantasy Bundesliga season for the International Break but with Robert Lewandowski missing in action, find out how the template team shapes up without him for matchday 27.

Forwards

Andre Silva

If the most prolific striker in the league is ruled out for a month, then the player who is second to him on the goal-scoring charts becomes an easy recommendation. Silva had a couple of quiet weeks but showed us glimpses against Union Berlin on matchday 26 with two goals and assists in a 5-2 rout. With most premium forwards struggling with form or having difficult fixtures, he could be the forward to splurge your excess cash on even though he plays against Dortmund and Wolfsburg in his next two games.

Saša Kalajdžić

It feels almost criminal to buy one of the cheapest strikers in the game when you could afford the most expensive forwards in the game and still have money left over but Saša has justified his worth with his performances. Only Lewandowski was in better goal-scoring form than him with 12 goals over the last eight matchdays compared to the Austrian target man’s eight goals in the same period. He is giving the premium players a run for their money and you couldn’t ask for a better bargain at 7.3M.

Midfielders

Christopher Nkunku

When Nkunku starts, it is hard to keep him out of your fantasy team for too long. He is one of the most consistent players in the league but has received tough competition from teammate Dani Olmo over the last few weeks with both players consistently involved in the attack and notching up double-digit scores on a regular basis.

Filip Kostić

Kostić is in the form of his life and his recent fantasy scores are a reflection of that. Since matchday 13, he has failed to score above 10 points just twice and has averaged 15 points per game in the same time frame. There is no doubt that Filip Kostić is the most essential player in the game after Robert Lewandowski.

Florian Wirtz

Leverkusen have just suffered back-to-back embarrassing losses against Hertha and Arminia but there is no better game to bounce back than against Schalke. Wirtz himself has struggled with form recently so he isn’t exactly a template player but he will be a popular pick amongst those looking to target a Leverkusen player against the team at the bottom of the table.

Marco Richter

Richter has spent most of the season coming off the bench for Augsburg but in his last two starts, he has shown glimpses of being a high floor-high ceiling player with scores of 10 without any involvement in goals and 23 with a goal and an assist against Borussia. Augsburg have some favourable fixtures coming up with Hoffenheim, Schalke and Arminia facing them next and each game is well suited for Richter whose bulk points consists of shots at goal and creating them.

Defenders

Borna Sosa

Sosa is still a relative newcomer to the Bundesliga but has already drawn comparisons to legendary players such as David Beckham and Roberto Carlos in his short time playing in the German top-flight. He is another gift from this year’s Stuttgart team which is full of budget busters and leads the league in most goal involvements amongst defenders with eight assists thanks to his pinpoint accuracy from set-pieces and crosses.

Raphaël Guerreiro

If you are worried that Guerreiro won’t start because he is red-flagged then do not fret. He is in full training and his return will be a big boost for Dortmund against Eintracht Frankfurt as he leads the team in key passes per game (2.3) after Jadon Sancho (2.8). Especially with few sub >10M defenders to select from, it is worth shelling out the premium for one of the best defenders in Bundesliga Fantasy.

Kevin Mbabu

Since 27th January, only Chelsea have conceded fewer goals (2) in UEFA’s ‘Top 5’ leagues across all competitions compared to Wolfsburg (5). The Wolves have conceded in just two games out of their last 12 in the Bundesliga and Pokal so a defender from the team is a must-have. With Otavio suspended and LaCroix playing CB, Mbabu stands out as the best defensive option from Wolfsburg.

Phillip Mwene

Mainz have made massive improvements in defence against Svensson and among the teams that have conceded the fewest goals since January, the Zerofivers are part of the list with just seven goals conceded. With consecutive games against Arminia, Koln, Hertha and Bremen who are at the bottom for goals scored, there is a strong possibility that Mainz keep a clean sheet in most of the games.

Goalkeeper

Stefan Ortega

In a game where saves have more value than clean sheets, it only seems right that the keeper with the most saves has the most points. He might be getting a bit pricy now at 6.9M but budget is the last concern of every Fantasy Bundesliga manager right now and Ortega forms a great partnership with Müller who just scored 18 points his last game against Augsburg.

The Template XI

Bench and other alternatives: Florian Müller/Gregor Kobel/Robin Zentner (GK), Christopher Trimmel/Jeremie Frimpong/Deyovaisio Zeefuik (DEF), Leroy Sané/Maximilian Arnold/Christoph Baumgartner (MID), Erling Haaland/Wout Weghorst/Thomas Müller (FWD)

Total team value: 182.4M

Note: The bench isn’t necessarily a template and you could replace those spots with differentials instead.
