Fantasy Bundesliga: Must-Have/Template Players for Matchday 14

The Fantasy Bundesliga team decided to ‘gift’ us a wildcard for the winter break and as the Bundesliga resumes tomorrow, we look at the must-have or template players that will be common amongst fantasy managers on unlimited transfers in matchday 14.

Forwards

Robert Lewandowski

No surprises for the first template player here. Someone who is averaging a goal every 59 minutes shouldn’t even cross your mind as someone to ignore especially in a run where he plays defensively vulnerable teams like Schalke, Mainz, Hertha, Arminia, Freiburg and Augsburg within the next eight matchdays.

Erling Braut Håland

Lewandowski’s biggest rival for the “kicker Torjägerkanone”, Haaland was almost on equal footing with him in terms of goal-scoring before an injury setback kept him out for a few matchdays. His absence has had a massive effect on Borussia Dortmund – In their last four Bundesliga games, Dortmund won only one game against Werder Bremen, drew against Frankfurt and lost against Stuttgart and Union while scoring an average of 1.25 goals per game compared to 2.4 goals per game with him. So one can expect him to improve the team and players around him massively which is something to be optimistic about as they play Wolfsburg and Leipzig next.

Midfielders

Vincenzo Grifo

Grifo might not have the easiest games coming up with Hoffenheim (A), Koln (H) and Bayern Munich (A) but If you want a premium midfielder then Grifo has been firing on all cylinders and was one of the most in-form players in the Bundesliga before the break averaging an unreal 14.2 points over his last five games.

Joshua Kimmich

The second premium midfielder on this list, Kimmich might be a deep-lying midfielder but his numbers prove that he is highly involved in the attack and is also a reliable asset in Fantasy Bundesliga. The position change from defender to midfielder seems to have minimal effect on him as he has returned with double-digit points in each of the four Bundesliga games he has started this season. If you want a Bayern midfielder against Mainz then Kimmich is the only one worth considering even if he comes with a hefty price tag.

Lars Stindl

Even though Stindl will be a template player because of his popularity amongst fantasy managers due to his recent performances, it is mostly a one-off as he plays against Arminia and then Bayern Munich at home next. Unless you think he is a ‘set and forget’ player and is worth keeping for the long term even when if he got tougher games.

Florian Wirtz

A budget-buster from high-flying Bayer Leverkusen, he has been a must-have asset from the 2nd ranked team in the league. The 17-year-old has displayed calm and composure that compares to some of the most experienced players in the league and he will just keep getting better with age.

Giovanni Reyna

With teammate Jadon Sancho struggling to regain some of yesteryear’s form, Reyna has taken on some of the responsibilities on his shoulders and the 18-year-old American has flourished with three goals and four assists to his name in 13 games. Making him an essential pick if you want Dortmund cover.

Defenders

Angeliño

The Leipzig wing-back has established himself as essential/template after finishing as the second-highest scorer in Bundesliga Fantasy till the winter break. He is currently Leipzig’s top goal-scorer in the league with four goals and two assists and also makes an occasional OOP appearance as a winger. Angeliño is the most fixture proof defender there is.

Raphaël Guerreiro

An important piece in Borussia Dortmund’s defense as well as offense, Guerreiro has been a bright spot in what has been an out of form Dortmund defense with his two goals and five assists.

Borna Sosa

Sosa has the highest ceiling for defenders on a budget and is a cheap entry into an attacking Stuttgart side. He is also on set-pieces and is one for the long term competing with Maxence Lacroix for a spot in the template team. It depends on whether you think Wolfsburg will do better defensively or will Sosa make up for it with his attacking bonus points.

Goalkeeper

Frederik Rønnow

New Schalke head coach Christian Gross hasn’t clarified on who will be the #1 between the sticks but based on recent performances, we can assume it is Rønnow. The Danish keeper has the best average amongst all starting keepers with seven points per game and is good enough that you could choose to forego your second keeper if it seems right to you.

The Template XI

Bench and their alternatives: Stefan Ortega/Gregor Kobel (GK), Marvin Freidrich/Maxence Lacroix/Alphonso Davies (DEF), Peter Pekarik/Ludwig Augustinsson/Christian Günter (DEF), Matheus Cunha/Leon Bailey/Andrej Kramarić (FWD)

Total team value: 170.8M

Note: The bench isn’t necessarily template and you could replace those spots with differentials instead.

My prediction: 4-0

Joker

I think a strong Bayern team that will be spurred on by the return of key players Joshua Kimmich and Alphonso Davies might be too much for Mainz to handle. Especially with Mainz still struggling to find balance with their third manager in three months. So Bayern Munich 4-0 FSV Mainz is my joker pick for the week.

Bundesliga Fantasy: Team Of The Season So Far

It has been a topsy-turvy season so it is only right that the fantasy team of the season features some surprising names to go along with some fairly obvious ones such as Lewandowski and Angeliño. This is the Bundesliga Fantasy team of the season so far:

Forwards

Robert Lewandowski

If you thought his last season tally of 34 goals in 31 games was a one-off then you are gravely mistaken. The Best FIFA Men’s Player of the year is right on track for another shot at breaking the legendary striker “Der Bomber” Gerd Müller’s all-time goal-scoring record with 17 goals in 12 matches already to go along with four assists. He is the highest scorer in fantasy this season with 189 points and is averaging higher points this season (16) than last season (14) in which he also finished as the highest scorer. Lewandowski has only failed to return in two games that he has started this season so not having him in your team isn’t an option. He is ageing like fine wine and is simply the best asset in Bundesliga Fantasy there is.

Thomas Müller

Müller is second amongst forwards for fantasy points scored this season with 155 points. He might’ve started the season on a hot note with three goals and four assists in his first four games but has cooled down since then with just two goals and assists in his last five games as teammate Kinglsey Coman’s resurgence in form meant that both are now tied for most assists this season with seven and it made him the second-best forward option from FCB in fantasy towards the end of the year. Still, his partnership with Lewandowski forms the most lethal attacking duo in the league accounting for almost 60% of Bayern Munich’s goals and he always remains a tempting option for a double up.

Wout Weghorst

The dutch big man has been enjoying a purple patch as of late and has already scored over half the goals this season (9 in 13 games) compared to his highest ever tally in the Bundesliga of 17 goals in 34 games set in 18-19 for which he has been rewarded with 130 points. The schedule has mostly been on the easy side for Wolfsburg so far (which explains their fourth position) but as tougher games keep approaching, you can still rely on Wout Weghorst and his ability to use his head (to score goals of course!).

Honourable mentions: André Silva (128), Matheus Cunha (114) and Leon Bailey (114)

Midfielders

Vincenzo Grifo

Grifo has always been a reliable option in fantasy but it was still unexpected that he would be the best midfielder in the game this season over other premium midfielders with 126 points for his six goals and four assists. He was mostly overlooked at the start of the season since he only had two goals and assists in eight games but he immediately became a must-have as he went on to return in every game since then with four goals and two assists in five games. Got a set-piece and need a lethal right-foot? Call Grifo.

Lars Stindl

After the injury to Hofmann and the form of players around him falling at an alarming rate, Stindl stepped up big time to lead Borussia with eight goals (highest amongst midfielders) and an assist in 13 games. His highlight so far, however, was his hattrick against Frankfurt on matchday 12 which included two goals in added time to draw the game 3-3. He is a contender for the most improved player award if there ever was one.

Florian Wirtz

Some might even forget that Kai Havertz left Bayer Leverkusen this year but that is the kind of effect that Wirtz has brought with him. The 17-year-old attacking midfielder has filled in his boots perfectly and was also the youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history before Moukoko broke his record. Eventually going on to score two goals and assisting four this season. Wirtz has been an absolute bargain at just 8.1M for a player that possesses the same talent and potential as Havertz which makes him the most affordable outfield player on this list.

Giovanni Reyna

Wirtz’s senior at 18 years, he has beaten fellow teammate Jadon Sancho to feature on the list with 111 points in fantasy to his name. Reyna also has more goals and assists than Sancho while costing just 8.7M compared to Sancho’s 18.5M and is another certain star in the making. Both Reyna and Wirtz have been an incredible value of money in fantasy and might be must-haves going ahead.

Honourable mentions: Nadiem Amiri (106) and Daniel Caligiuri (106)

Defenders

Angeliño

Angeliño has been a real superstar this season and should be one of the first players on your team along with Lewandowski when you wildcard. He has scored the second-highest points so far with 167 points and is tied as RB Leipzig’s top goalscorer in the Bundesliga with four goals along with two assists. Leipzig have also conceded the least goals this season with nine and have kept the most clean sheets with six. Angeliño has returned with double-digit scores in eight out of 12 games this season and has eclipsed 20+ points thrice. This man is turning into a real fan favourite now.

Raphaël Guerreiro

If we are talking about fan favourites then Guerreiro is one of them and his inclusion in the team of the season is no surprise after his position was corrected from midfielder to defender for this season. His two goals and five assists make him the defender with the most goal contributions so far with 110 points to show for it.

Mats Hummels

It is rare for a centre back to be one of the highest-scoring defenders in the game over full-backs and wing-backs but Hummels makes the list on the back of three goals and five clean sheets for a total of 109 points at an average of eight points per game. I think you should also be wary of the fact that even though Dortmund kept five clean sheets in their first six games, they’ve conceded in every game since then (16 goals in seven games).

Honourable mentions: Marvin Friedrich (98), Christopher Trimmel (96) and Christian Günter (95)

Goalkeeper

Stefan Ortega

Probably the most surprising inclusion in the team of the season, newly promoted team Arminia Bielefeld’s goalkeeper Stefan Ortega makes the list on the back of some strong keeping displays despite conceding 23 goals and keeping just two clean sheets this season. You might wonder how but Bundesliga Fantasy’s bonus points system means that Ortega is generously rewarded for saves that he makes. Which explains his average of five points for just saves per game.

Honourable mention: Rafał Gikiewicz (80)

Team of the season after matchday 13

Bundesliga Fantasy Differential Picks: Matchday 13

This could be the final week in Bundesliga Fantasy before we received unlimited transfers for the Christmas break so we look at the differential picks that could go big or go home in matchday 13 of Fantasy Bundesliga:

Forwards

Andre Silva Vs FC Augsburg (A)

The Portuguese striker has been a level above all his teammates this season and is currently third on the goal-scoring charts with nine goals and two assists in just 11 games. He is also the third-highest scoring forward in Bundesliga Fantasy this season after Lewandowski and Muller and has scored in every game except those against current top four teams (Bayern, Leipzig and Dortmund). Yet he is owned by just 5%. There aren’t too many must-have options to choose from forwards this week but Silva stands out due to his form and Saturday kickoff.

Yussuf Poulsen Vs Koln (H)

There hasn’t been much hype around Poulsen as compared to other forwards but he is doing his bit and has chipped in with four goals and two assists in 10 games which makes him the second-highest goalscorer for Leipzig after Angelino. Koln has been touted as a strong physical team but even target men find a way to score goals against them such as Weghorst and Schick last week. He is averaging 12 points over his last two games and offers star flexibility for the 3:30 PM CET games.

Midfielders

Maximillian Arnold Vs VfB Stuttgart (H)

There will be a special emphasis on Stuttgart’s weakness this week: Set-pieces. They are especially vulnerable to headers which were both the goals they conceded against Union Berlin last week and Arnold’s deliveries from free-kicks and corners for Wout Weghorst might be an effective strategy for Wolfsburg to score goals this week.

Aymen Barkok Vs FC Augsburg (A)

Barkok’s performances have been quite the surprise for Frankfurt and he has scored two goals and assisted three in his last five games including a superb well-composed effort that saw him evade multiple defenders in the box to score the goal against Borussia last week. He has been the most in-form player at the club after Silva and offers bang-for-buck at just 3.8M.

Defenders

Kevin Mbabu Vs VfB Stuttgart (H)

Mbabu is already averaging 12 points since his season debut and has one of the best floors for a defender in the game. He has an average of nine bonus points over the two games he has played and also got an assist against Bayern Munich last week. He is the best defensive option from Wolfsburg and they are unbeaten in their last 12 home games against Stuttgart so Mbabu could be set to return in double-digits again this week.

Bastian Oczipka Vs Arminia Bielefeld (H)

This is for the ones who think Schalke could get their first win of the season in this game. Oczipka has slowly been racking up points for pass to shots which made him a popular option in Bundesliga Fantasy over the years and now he also takes over free-kick and corner-kick responsibilities from Mark Uth in his absence due to injury. If Schalke are to turn their season around starting from this game then Oczipka could come good. But as it is, he remains as a one-week differential option only.

Goalkeeper

Jiri Pavlenka Vs FSV Mainz (A)

Pavlenka has got six points or above for saves in his last three games and also saved a penalty against Dortmund even though Reus scored the rebound. He is in a good run of form and his opponents for the week: Mainz have struggled to score in the last two games so he has the potential to get saves as well as clean sheet points.

Joker

It is a bit difficult to get the joker right in Bundesliga predictor this week as the Bayern and Dortmund games could go either way so RB Leipzig 2-1 Koln is my pick for the week. Another honourable mention will be Borussia 3-1 Hoffenheim.

1Robert LewandowskiFCB@B0421.4MKudos to Leverkusen for being top of the table and the second best defense in the league currently but in all honestly they've had an easy run of fixtures so far and have played the big four just twice and at home. Bayern Munich and the new FIFA best men's player is going to be a real challenge.
2Wout WeghorstWOBVs VFB16.9MStuttgart have conceded 42% of their goals this season from headers including two against Union and who else is a better fit to exploit it than Weghorst?
3Andre SilvaSGE@FCA16.4M
4Matheus CunhaBSC@SCF14.4MHertha failing to score against Mainz is concerning but Cunha was still one of the better players and was unlucky not to return in that game.
5Yussuf PoulsenRBLVs KOE12M
6Marco ReusBVB@FCU17.1MIf you want a Dortmund forward from the early kick-off then it is between Reus and Moukoko. I choose the former.
7Leon BaileyB04@FCB13.3MBayern is a bad matchup but they haven't been at their best recently and Bailey's form is too hard to ignore.
8Kingsley ComanFCB@B0414.7M
9Nicolás GonzálezVFB@WOB9M
10Robin QuaisonM05Vs SVW9.8M

Midfielders

RankNameTeamOpponentValueComments
1Ritsu DōanDSC@S048.2MDōan has been the brightest spot in a rather underwhelming Arminia side and is constantly their most dangerous player, shooting at will and creating the best chances. He even got 12 points last week without scoring or assisting and he is the best pick against Schalke this week in what is a ceiling game for him.
2Lars StindlBMGVs TSG13.7MA rocket free-kick, penalty and a header to conclude a perfect hattrick against Frankfurt last week. He is the focal point of the Borussia attack and his upside is high against a bottom team.
3Daniel Caligiuri FCAVs SGE10.8MThis is one of the worst Frankfurt defenses we have seen in a while and Augsburg must have sensed the possibility of getting three points here.
4Vincenzo GrifoSCFVs BSC13.3MGrifo is ranked a bit lower than people would expect given his recent form but Hertha have put in some strong defensive displays recently.
5Giovanni ReynaBVB@FCU8.8M
6Dani OlmoRBLVs KOE15.4M
7Aymen BarkokSGE@FCA3.8MHe was much more effective with a goal and assist against Borussia than Kostic who costs 4x and had zero shots, key passes and dribbles.
8Jadon SanchoBVB@FCU18.3M
9Florian WirtzB04Vs FCB8.1M
10Christoph BaumgartnerTSG@BMG11.2M

Defenders

RankNameTeamOpponentValueComments
1AngeliñoRBLVs KOE15.4MKoln failed to register a shot on target while conceding four against Leverkusen and now they face the best defense in the league.
2Raphaël GuerreiroBVB@FCU15.6MI was a bit concerned with Guerreiro playing as a full-back but now he has a goal and two assists in two games in that position.
3Kevin MbabuWOBVs VFB10.5M
4Ludwig AugustinssonSVW@M059.5MEveryone was too high on Mainz after their victory against Freiburg and they have got only one point since then in four games while also failing to score in their last two games against Koln and Hertha.
5Christian GünterSCFVs BSC12.1M
6Christopher TrimmelFCUVs BVB10.5MThe attacking upside of Union full-backs is almost double without Kruse and both Lenz and Trimmel returned with assists in the last game against Stuttgart.
7Borna SosaVFB@WOB4.4M
8Maximilian MittelstädtBSC@SCF8.1MMittelstädt made an immediate impact after coming on as a sub and registered three key passes and finished on six points in just 30 minutes. He is expected to start again and could be a canny pick.
9Anderson LucoquiDSC@S041.5MNot many players can average six or eight points for duels won consistently like Lucoqui. He could be a decent enabler as he plays against Schalke.
10Alphonso DaviesFCB@B0414.3M

Goalkeepers

1Stefan OrtegaDSC@S045.2MIn a battle of two teams which are tied for the least goals scored (8), no one can predict which way it is going to end up.
2Jiri PavlenkaSVW@M057.2M
3Rafał GikiewiczFCAVs SGE7.5M
4Gregor KobelVFB@WOB5.3M
5Florian MüllerSCFVs BSC3.5MFreiburg have kept a cleansheet in their last two games but it was against Arminia and Schalke.
